Topcon releases rugged FC-5000 tablet PC

Topcon Positioning Group says its new FC-5000 handheld field computer puts the processing power usually only seen in the office directly into the hands of Australia’s surveying, mining and construction professionals.

Available in Australia through local distributor Position Partners, the 7-inch tablet PC comes with the Windows 10 operating system and an Intel Atom Z3745 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB of flash storage. The tablet also has an SD slot for additional memory.

The touchscreen display has been optically bonded to increase its readability in direct sunlight or humid conditions. The controller is compatible with all Topcon GNSS receivers running the Magnet Field, Site or Layout software. The device also has its own internal GNSS navigation system.

Topcon says the FC-5000 has been built to withstand the elements when working outdoors. The tablet has an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance and a design that exceeds MIL-STD-810G (US Military Standard) for resistance to humidity, sand, vibration and shock.

The device can also be used in temperatures ranging from -20C to 50C. Topcon also claims the device has a battery life of up to 15 hours.

“The FC-5000 is the toughest on the market … No matter if you’re working in hot or cold, wet or dusty conditions, consider the FC-5000 your office, anywhere,” Topcon director of global surveying products Ray Kerwin says.

Additional features on the FC-5000 include an 8-megapixel camera on the rear with an LED flash for field photography, as well as a 2-megapixel camera on the front for video meetings. Connectivity comes through dual-band Wi-Fi, an optional 4G mobile connection or through the device’s long-range Bluetooth capabilities.
