WA opens Innovation Booster Grant applications

Western Australian start-ups and small businesses can apply for grants of up to $40,000 to help get their ideas off the ground

Innovation Booster Grants (IBGs) are designed to give innovators a leg-up on the path to commercialisation.

This year, the grant amount on offer has doubled, from $20,000 to up to $40,000.

Grants are awarded in the following categories:

  • research and development
  • product development
  • technology transfer and intellectual property
  • commercialisation Support Services.

First launched in 2011, the IBG is part of the McGowan government’s $16.7 million New Industries Fund. The fund aims to attract investment and promote the economic diversification of WA.

Previous grant recipients in 2022 included:

  • Click Brick – converting recycled plastic into bricks
  • Hemp Squared – hemp block certification for social housing use
  • Lycaon Group – self-contained hydrogen storage and power module for industrial equipment.

“One of the hardest parts for companies focused on innovation is transitioning great ideas into commercial products,” Innovation and ICT Minister Stephen Dawson says.

“We are excited to be doubling the grant size this year. We know that supporting our local innovators is key to unlocking the jobs of the future for Western Australians, and the diversification of the state’s economy.

“Our new and emerging innovators and start-ups are encouraged to apply for the 2023 round of Innovation Booster Grants to support their journey to commercialisation.”

Since launch, 233 grants have been awarded, worth approximately $3.7 million.

Applications for the grants close on March 15, 2023 at 11:00am AWST. To learn more about the IBGs, click here
