Western Harbour Tunnel reaches excavation milestone

Construction of Stage 1 of the Western Harbour Tunnel has reached a milestone

Stage 1 of the 6.5-kilometre, triple-lane Western Harbour Tunnel has reached a major milestone, with all excavation between Rozelle and Birchgrove now complete.

Delivered by CPB Contractors in a joint venture for Transport for NSW, tunnelling work began on this project in mid-2021.

Since then, the Stage 1 team has excavated nearly 8.5km of tunnels in total, including a 2.6km network of cross passages, temporary tunnels, ventilation caverns and substations.

The tunnels are the result of three and a half years of hard work, dedication and collaboration from the entire project team. Standout achievements here include:

  • excavating more than 1,000,000 bank cubic metres of spoil
  • creating 26 tunnel crossings above Rozelle Interchange and Sydney Metro West, while maintaining uninterrupted operations
  • delivery of 8.5km of tunnels
  • excavation of two underground ventilation caverns 19 metres wide, 42 metres long and 25 metres high
  • installing approximately 105,000 rock bolts ranging from 1.2 metres to 9.0 metres in length.

“I am incredibly proud of our crew’s outstanding work and technical excellence,” CPB Contractors project director Sam Diamond says.

“Our work on Stage 1 of the Western Harbour Tunnel project lays the foundations for the delivery of critical infrastructure that will connect WestConnex in Rozelle with the Warringah Freeway in North Sydney.”

CPB Contractors’ delivery of Stage 1 of the WHT project involves the excavation and lining of Western Harbour Tunnel, including ventilation tunnels and substations between Rozelle Interchange and Cove St, Birchgrove.
