Yanmar unveils first electric mini excavator

Yanmar’s debut electric mini excavator is set for an official European launch in October 2022.

The SV17e is powered by 48 volt batteries

Yanmar has released a prototype electric mini excavator in Europe, making its debut in the market segment.

The new SV17e excavator is a strategic step by Yanmar as it looks toward a more sustainable future, the company says.

The SV17e will operate in the 1.5–2.0 tonne segment and is powered by electric drive and 48-volt batteries with fast-charging capabilities.

The machine is also quiet and produces zero emissions meaning it is capable of operating underground, in confined spaces and in urban areas where strict emission restrictions may be in place.

The machine will go on sale at Bauma 2022 – the world’s leading construction machinery trade show – and is aimed at the European market.

Yanmar says the electric excavator has been designed to also offer operators increased levels of comfort, with detail to make the machine ergonomically friendly and easy and precise to control.

EMEA director product manager Cedric Durand says Yanmar hopes it will be more than just an electric mini excavator.

“Our prototype is significant because it demonstrates our capability to bring the quality and reliability of our highly respected conventional engine technology into the arena of electrification,” says Durand.

Ahead of its sale launch in October 2022, the SV17e is currently being tested.

“We are particularly pleased with the power, and control of the machine. Of course, this is a quiet, zero emission machine but that, in itself, is not enough,” says EMEA engineering director Sota Takami regarding the testing.

“We must create a great feeling for the operator. I am confident that professional operators will be very comfortable in this machine, they will certainly feel the power, control and the precision handling they will need to take on the big jobs as well as the small jobs.”
